Our children are our most valuable resource. We understand that these babies are not ours to own, rather they are on loan from us from our higher power. It is then our responsibility to do the best we can for them. The decision to become a mother/father/caregiver is the most sacred journey one can embark on. Because of the high value we put on our children and parenthood there are many teachings and traditions surrounding this topic. In this presentation we will take a decolonized approach to parenting (which is similar to gentle parenting tactics utilized today). With a deep dive into how the trauma of Residential School and other colonization efforts throughout the generations have confused these techniques. And how with compassion, understanding, and a better understanding of the inter-generational violence that has been integrated into Indigenous families, we can better support our Indigenous students along with others students who may have a history of being exposed to chaos in their home environments.
